St. Francis is an ethnically and culturally diverse congregation committed to social justice and ministries with the marginalized and displaced persons. Jamie works with St. Francis’ Iskashitaa Refugee Network, a resettlement ministry, and with a metropolitan ministry that St. Francis shares with nearby St. James United Methodist Church. The two churches are part of a larger initiative to encourage Tucson’s United Methodist churches to collaborate in service ministries. Amber’s affiliate is the United Methodist General Board of Church and Society in Washington, DC. US-based fellows engage in advocacy for justice; social services, notably for youth and the elderly; and leadership development for church and community. Amber experiences the ethnic and cultural diversity of a global capital city and engages in the education and advocacy that marks the work of the church and society agency. She assists in research, seminar design, and leadership development, particularly around the churches’ Social Principles. Her work is geared especially to college, university, and seminary students. Sarah’s work site is the Gallery After School Program of The Salt United Methodist Church (formerly St. John’s) in Oklahoma City. This program supports students who are struggling with academics by tutoring and mentoring them after school. The Gallery works with two elementary schools. After school the students get a light meal before beginning their homework and working on projects. Sarah keeps track of students’ progress, recruits program volunteers, and promotes financial support of the project among churches in the conference. NOAH works with homeless men, women, and children with the goal of building a supportive, motivating environment where individuals can grow and act out positive life changes. She specifically relates to the Bag Lunch Program, lunch being only the first step toward entrance into a supportive environment. Meals together—lunch is provided Monday through Thursday—lead to case worker relationships.
